2010 GSI Fall Field Trip

“The Geology of Klein and Conklin Quarries,
Johnson County, Iowa”

Saturday, October 9, 2009
Meet at Klein Quarry (3445 Deer Creek Rd SE, Iowa City) @ 9:00 AM

Large calcite crystals at River Products Inc. main office in Iowa City, an example of some of the spectacular minerals found at the quarries!

On October 9th, take an opportunity to collect some amazing fossils and minerals, when the GSI Fall Field Trip and Annual Meeting visit River Products Inc. Klein and Conklin quarries.  This will be a joint venture between the Geological Society of Iowa (GSI), the Mid-America Paleontology Society (MAPS), and Cedar Valley Rock and Mineral Society (CVRMS) so we expect a huge turnout.  Spend the day collecting cool calcite, pyrite, and millerite minerals and wonderful specimens of crinoids, corals, and even trilobites!  After the field trip, there will be a pizza dinner at The Mill Restaurant in downtown Iowa City, and our special guest speaker will be Benjamin Greenstein who will speak on coral reef response to climate change.  As always, the field trip is free and open to the public, but to attend the banquet you must register, and it’s $6.00 per person.  Please bring closed shoes, hard hats (GSI will have some on hand for a few folks), eye protection, and a sack lunch. We hope to see you on October 9th!

To visit Klein Quarry, go south on Deer Creek Road, which is south of Highway 6 and just west of Lowe’s
